in MS Word 2010, word allows me to enter a comment. However, I am not able to change the background color of the comment box.

Is there a way by which background color of the comment box can be changed in MS Word?
I am asking this because, I am writing a VBA code to read all the comments inserted in a document. I also want to get information about the background color of the comment box. So, if it can be done using tools provided in the ribbon, it can be done through VBA as well. With this notion in mind, I am asking this.

As Ahmad indicated, you can change the color of a comment by having the comment have a different author.
You can access all of the comments via ActiveDocument.Comments.
Something like the following:
Would change the author of every comment, and each comment would have a different color.
That being said, you should be able to read all comments and figure out if the colors are the same by tracking the author of the comment. However, there does not appear to be any practical way to update the color of the comment via code or even know the actual comment color.

I noticed that in Word, comments background color can't be decided by you, but they can be changed randomly (at least to me) by changing the username of the current user.
For example, I originally had all my comments in pink boxes. Until I executed this
After that, each comment I added is in a violet box. I did another change,
and yet my new comments were added into a another shade of pink. Look at the attached screenshot. These comments appear in three different colors, but they all were added by me under different usernames.

I am trying to alter the text of a Comment object in Word VSTO (2013) but for whatever reason I am unable to select the text via Application.ActiveDocument.Range(int,int) or comment.Reference.Find.Execute(text). Although both operations 'work' when you call the .select() method afterwards nothing is selected. So how can one achieve altering the Font or text color of a Comment in Word VSTO?

You can set tracked changes and comments to appear in different colors for different authors. But Word automatically picks which color represents each author—and that color might change when you reopen the document or someone else opens the document.
-
Click Review > Tracking Dialog Box Launcher.
-
Click Advanced Options.
-
Click the arrows next to the Color boxes and the Comments box, and choose By author. You can also color-code text moves and changes made to table cells.
Tip: To see everyone’s changes in a single color, click that color instead of By author. For example, to see all insertions as Turquoise, click the arrow by Color, and then click Turquoise. Now everyone’s insertions are colored turquoise.
These color settings are for your computer only. Other people will see the tracked changes in whatever colors they set up. The By author colors will look different on different computers, too.
In Microsoft Word, you can apply a background color to an entire table or even just to specific portions of a table. This is helpful when you want to highlight a portion of a table. For example, if you’re working with sales figures, you may want to apply a different color to a column, row, or cell that contains totals. Sometimes, tinted rows or columns are used to make a complex table easier to read.
Add a Table With Shading
-
Click the Insert tab on the ribbon and select the Tables tab.
-
Drag your cursor across the grid to choose how many rows and columns you want in the table.
-
In the Table Design tab, click on Borders.
-
Select a border style, size, and color.
-
Choose the borders you want to apply from the drop-down menu under Borders or click on Border Painter to draw on the table to indicate which cells should be colored.
Add Color to a Table With Borders and Shading
-
Highlight the cells you want to tint with a background color. Use the Ctrl key (Command on a Mac) to select non-contiguous cells.
-
Right-click on one of the selected cells.
-
On the pop-up menu, select Borders and Shading.
-
Open the Shading tab.
-
Click the drop-down menu under Fill to open the color chart to select a background color.
-
From the Style drop-down menu select a tint percentage or a pattern in the chosen color.
-
Choose Cell in the Apply to drop-down box to apply the chosen color only to the highlighted cells. Selecting Table fills the entire table with the background color.
-
Click OK.
Add Color With Page Borders Design Tab
-
Click on the Design tab on the ribbon.
-
Highlight the table cells to which you want to apply the background color.
-
Click the Page Borders tab and select Shading.
-
In the drop-down menu under Fill, select a color from the color chart.
-
Select a percentage of tint or a pattern from the Style drop-down menu.
-
Leave the Apply to setting at Cell to add the background tint to the selected cells.
